Lightning Bolt Pipe Boardshort - Product DetailsMy interest in the most recent coming of Lightning Bolt was actually cemented by a pair of these boardshorts. Now, anyone who knows me will tell you that I am not the guy down with the retro thing. I don't ride boards with resin tints and I don't own any twin-fins or retro-fishes. However, I was first introduced to surfing around the time of the original influence of Lightning Bolt, so I have an appreciation for the era what was really the end of the shortboard revolution when things were going from just wierd to functional. Boardshorts were undergoing a similar distillation and the goods from the Bolt were really the ultimate high-performance boardshorts. This Pipe short is an exact replica of the trunk that Lopez and Rory Russel were putting deep into huge caverns in the winters of 1976-78. They are a little bit better because garment manufacturing has come a ways from those days. The fabric in this Pipe boardshort is blend of nylon and cotton. You get a vintage feel, but with water functionality. They have durable double snaps, a velcro down back pocket, and scalloped legs. Sure they are a bit short, but I've actually surfed in these and they are pretty sick. I also bust these puppies out crusing around the house because they are insanely comfortable. Of course, with short 18" length, you may not want to rock these when you run down to the grocery store, but they definately have a place. Under the instructive hands of new owners, Lightning Bolt has come back onto the scene with precise attention to the original style seen in the mid-70's on the North Shore. The Pelican is a 18" boardshort that stays true to the original Lightning Bolt design. It is made from a super soft cotton fabric that is totally ocean worthy. It has a back pocket with a flap, a velcro fly, a 3 eyelet waist tie, a patch on the back of the waist, and the timeless Bolt icon embroidered on the front.
